About us

DFDS Tor Line is a leading North European liner shipping operator and is a part of the DFDS Group, which is listed on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange.

DFDS Tor Line is operating a route network based on three geographical regions; the Baltic Sea, the North Sea (Sweden/Norway to Belgium/UK) and the Continent (Denmark/Germany/Holland to the UK) with subsidiaries in Sweden, Norway, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania and Russia. The route network includes both ro-ro and ro-pax routes, the latter primarily in the Baltic, where the market for accompanied trailers is larger than on the North Sea.

The activities of DFDS Tor Line also include those of the daughter companies AB DFDS LISCO (Lithuania), DFDS Lys Line AS (Norway) and DFDS Container Line B.V (Holland), DFDS SUARDIAZ Line (Spain), Polferries (partly owned) and a joint venture with the Russian state-owned shipping company SOVCOMFLOT offers Ro-Ro service between Kiel and St. Petersburg.

The fleet of DFDS Tor Line counts approximately 65 Ro-Ro, Ro-Pax, Lo-Lo and multipurpose vessels.

Customer focus
DFDS Tor Line focuses on high reliability and frequent sailings in accordance with our customers’ demands. Our customer portfolio mainly consists of international haulage and forwarding companies, who make up approximately 56% of the volumes, and producers of industrial goods, who accounts for approximately 44% of the total.

The sales force of each subsidiary handle the majority of DFDS Tor Lines sales. Yet, recognising that the markets DFDS operate in increasingly requires more complicated supply chain solutions to larger customers a group sales function for DFDS was established in 2008, which includes a Key Account system aiming at servicing our largest customers by coordinating our sales efforts for the freight related DFDS business units including DFDS Tor Line. The group sales function also includes commodity sales teams with special knowledge about selected industries, geographical regions and their development and trends, which is promoted by the teams internally in DFDS and used to develop better solutions for and with our customers.

The selected commodities are:

  • Steel
  • Chemicals
  • Cars, trucks and buses (Autologistics)
  • Forest products
  • Project Cargo
  • Trailer- and container forwarders

Of the industrial customers the most important are the producers of heavy industrial goods and automotive manufacturers, whose logistics include a significant element of transport by sea and terminal services. Taylor made logistics systems are developed for these customers often requiring investment in specialised transport equipment, IT solutions, dedicated warehouses and, in some cases, the deployment of larger tonnage. Industrial logistics contracts are therefore long-term with DFDS as an integral part of our customers' supply chain.

InfoBridge
Transport covers both the transportation of cargo and that of information. An efficient flow of information is a prerequisite of an efficient transport system and will become even more important in the future. In order to simplify the information flow DFDS Tor Line offers a range of IT options, including EDI interfaces, that enable our customers via their own supply chain planning systems to book and control the movements of their cargo in DFDS Tor Line's route network.

Quality
Most of our core operations have already been ISO-9001 certified several years ago. The quality work within the company continues, and all vessels are ISM certified. The Swedish shore-based organisation has obtained the ISO-14001 environmental certification.
