DFDS MultiTerminal, Maasvlakte - Rotterdam

The new DFDS MultiTerminal opened in May 2003 and is located in the Europa harbour on the new port area called Maasvlakte in Rotterdam. This new location on the coast saves ships the long trip on the river and enables the terminal to handle even the largest ships.

Stevedoring and cargo handling facilities

The DFDS MultiTerminal specializes in the handling of ro-ro ships of all types, but is also capable of handling containerships, especially for the short sea, as well as all other types of conventional tonnage.

The terminal is located between the large containers terminals, such as Maersk-Sealand Terminal, the ECT Delta terminal, which handles Evergreen, Hanjin and Hapag-Lloyd, and the new Euromax Terminal of P&O Nedlloyd.

Two floating ro-ro ramps
At present the terminal has two floating ro-ro ramps the FOREST BRIDGE and the FUTURE BRIDGE, but further expansion up to four ro-ro ramps is possible.
The FOREST BRIDGE is located alongside the quay wall, which allows ro-ro ships with stern ramps to use their ramps and to load/discharge by the crane at the same time. The second ramp, FUTURE BRIDGE, located at the East side of the terminal, has been especially designed for long and heavy loads of up to 250 tons.

Stevedoring and cargo handling equipment

The terminal has a large number of specialized handling equipment for ro-ro stevedoring, including reach stackers, forklifts, tug masters and a crane which is capable of handling both containers and conventional cargo. The crane has a capacity up to 100 tons and a twin spreader with a capacity of up to 41 tons on one container or 2 x 32.5 tons on two 20-foot containers.
The four video controlled entrance lanes on the terminal are connected to a modern terminal management and cargo control system.
The terminal also provides storage (two covered sheds, each with a capacity of 2500m²) and repair facilities for containers, trailers and other shipping equipment as well as distribution and logistical services.
